A letter to CommunityMay 14, 2020

Dear Residents and Patrons of Veterans Park District,

As you’re aware, Governor Pritzker has extended the stay-at-home order through the end of May with a possibility of mid-June. The Park District continues to monitor information and waits for additional guidance from the Governor, the CDC, and the Illinois Department of Public Health beyond that time. Since social distancing and restrictions on groups larger than 10 will remain in place throughout the summer months, a number of important decisions had to be made. As a result, the following changes will occur as we focus on the safety, security, and sanitation for Veterans Park District patrons and staff.

    •  Gouin Pool, Swim lessons, and Concessions will not open for the 2020 season. Anyone who purchased a pool pass will be given the option to carry it over for the 2021 season or request a refund.

    •  Summer Day Camp, Sports Camp, Special Rec Camp, Jr Counselor Camp, Summer Learn and Play, Youth Athletic, Fitness, Special Recreation and Active Adult Programs will not run this 2020 Summer Season as an in-person program.

    •  Plans are in motion to offer Virtual Programing this Summer. Updates will be released on our website and Facebook pages.

    •  Registration is currently closed for all summer programming. When we are able to safely reopen, the focus will be on programs and offerings that best meet the community’s needs and use of the parks. Then, as soon as it’s safe and reasonable to do so, we will offer additional programming. We will continue to post updates on our website related to programming.

    •  No facility, gym, or turf rentals will be taken for June.

    •  All VPD Special Events for June and July and have been cancelled, including all Movies in the Park and Music and Movie Nights.

    •  Parks and outdoor exercise tracks will remain open for walking and jogging under the current social distancing guidelines. Tennis courts will be open. However, playgrounds, outdoor exercise equipment and athletic fields remain closed at the current time.

    •  Seasonal brochures will be available online only until further notice to provide maximum flexibility and cost savings.

As disappointing as this news may be, we feel it is the right decision for the health and safety of the general public as we cope with this unprecedented pandemic and how to meet the challenges it presents not just for the swimming pool, campers and all activities conducted by Veterans Park District.

We greatly look forward to the lifting of the stay at home order so that Veterans Park District, along with everyone else, can begin to transition back to a new "normal,” which we anticipate will allow for greater use of the parks and a gradual re-introduction of programs and services. It is our hope that when we come out on the other side of this, we will all emerge stronger as a community, and Veterans Park District looks forward to getting back to Enhancing the Quality of Life of our Residents.
